What we do:
The Overseas Humanitarian Project is an overseas community involvement trip that provides an opportunity for volunteers to explore potential roles and areas of contribution in humanitarian work beyond Singapore.
Our volunteers have been to various Asian countries over the years, such as Banda Aceh, Indonesia, and Thai Nguyen, Vietnam! In the two-week trip, they have assisted with the improvement of basic welfare amenities for the locals while learning new cultural practices.
Frequency:
TBC, suspended for AY 20/21
Personal Experiences
"My involvement in both OHPs have been memorable and enriching experiences in their own unique ways. It’s not always easy, with lots of challenges and considerations along the way, such as safety and well-being of the team, programmes, logistics, liaison etc. I am really fortunate to have the support of the SRC HQ staff, and OHP teammates who kindly lent their support and see the project through.
There are many takeaways but most importantly, it has been nice to see the impact of our efforts, even if it is on an individual level, such as seeing the students garnering interest in learning first-aid, and practicing bandaging skills together in our work in Banda Aceh, to sharing our best practices in learning English as a language among sharing of our respective cultures and practices in our Vietnam trip."
"A lot of volunteers embark on OHP thinking that they are doing it for the local community (and) improving the lives of people, but it's more a journey of self-growth than anything (else).
Real growth in a person can be seen in those who have been through OHP, as they usually came back different. When they see a different side of the world, this awareness is the key to making real sustainable change in the communities. Use that awareness to educate those around you, as the education will help you become more conscious of the choices you make on an everyday basis.
I urge anyone going into OHP to have the right mindset. It is how you utilise the growth that is key to making real change."
