What is your team’s project about?
1. the stateless villagers of Kampung Air in Semporna, Sabah
2. working closely with the students of Borneo Komrad, and also in conversation with government entities MDS (Majilis Daerah Semporna) as well as the organisation Amwil (in charge of waste collection in Semporna)
3. we built waste bins and set them up in strategic locations around the village, we also set in place a systme together with borneo komrad for waste collection.
What does your team enjoy most about the IEx project?
Working with members of the community! We are quite close with some of the students and they are definitely the best part of the project.
What are some challenges that you think are unique to the project?
Money disappeared a bit faster than expected and it was hard to keep track of, especially a challenge when we had to do the final budget tracking sheets.
Any specific tips about working with your team’s community?
Good to learn Malay! We have a group member who learnt Malay for this and he was of great great help. Would have been tough without him. It also helps to connect you to the students more and create even better work and synergies. The students and teachers are super chill though, no particular cultural sensitivities besides what is common sense. They're easygoing and very accomodating.
Any fun stories to share with your juniors?
One of the activities we look forward to the most when visiting is playing futsal with the students. We literally add it to our itinerary to make sure we don't miss it. This is a great opportunity to bond and have fun.
