Supervisor: Dr Shaun Lin
What is your team’s project about?
1. Primary and secondary school in Kampong Os, Kandal Province, Cambodia
2. Kampong Os Hun Sen School
3. We work with our community on improving their waste management capacities, through a two-pronged approach involving education and infrastructure.
What does your team enjoy most about the IEx project?
We love spending time with the children! They are really energetic and always happy to see us, they’re a huge source of motivation for us in this project :) and we appreciate the opportunity to spend time with our translators, each other and our supervisor too! We also like the food in Cambodia - fish amok is a must-try, and my group has a tradition where we visit Shaburi & Kintan Buffet at Aeon Mall (Phnom Penh) for our first dinner every trip.
What are some challenges that you think are unique to the project?
Language barrier was our biggest challenge, given that we didn’t know how to speak Khmer, and our community could only speak Khmer, so we had to rely entirely on our translators.
Any specific tips about working with your team’s community?
Try to learn basic Khmer if you have the time! And when using English to communicate, don’t speak too quickly.
Any fun stories to share with your juniors?
The children have a habit of following us around whenever we’re in the school, and they really like shaking our hands!
