Coverage in prime media:
There are low code-no code tools nowadays that can generate codes and automate certain tasks in coding. I was interviewed by TV3 Nightline about its implications to computer scientists and I highlighted the importance to integrate it in teaching.
I always remind the students that they shud take advantage those tools to support their productive struggle, rather than let the tools replace themselves as learners. The tools make coding faster and democratise coding to non-coders. My experience is that the students in the course i teach this semester “Algorithm Design and Analysis” gets better because they focus on debugging, redesigning, analysing and testing rather than having to scour the internet for resources. They learn to appreciate importance of leveraging the tools through clever prompts and more than ever, aware on possible opportunities and challenges brought together by this innovation.
Human coders are still relevant for many years to come. The tools are good for sparking ideas but it cannot replace the comprehensive user requirements capturing, codes need to be debugged and integrated into the deployment stage. For the nation to tap into innovation economy, high-skilled workforce is a must.
Throughout 2023 I've had the privilege of sharing insights, discoveries, and perspectives on the fascinating world of generative AI, especially among educational institutions. These talks delve into the cutting-edge technology that enables machines to create, mimic, and innovate in ways that challenge our understanding of creativity and innovation.
Over the course of this journey, I have seen the progress of acceptance and behavioral change in readiness to leverage this tech responsibly.
