NTI TO TRAIN 1,480 TEACHERS UNDER THE SDGs

All is now set by the National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna in preparation for the annual nationwide capacity building workshops for teachers under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Prof. Musa Garba Maitafsir‘s led-administration at the Institute has concluded arrangement to train 1,480 teachers, with each state and the FCT having 40 teachers in the training.

The training, which is part of the 2022 component, is scheduled between November 14 and 18 nationwide.
Briefing the nominated Institute’s staff deployed for the conduct of the training at the Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) hall, NTI Kaduna, Friday, November 10, Chairman NTI SDGs Implementation Committee, Dr. Ibrahim Bala, who is also the Overseer , Department of Fields Operations and Students’ Services(FOSS) , represented by the Deputy-Bursar, Mr. Daniel Ichapi, who is a member of the committee, said the major setbacks for the teaching profession in the country is that once teachers complete their teacher education training, they hardly continue to grow on the job professionally.

"Since both subject mastery and pedagogical ideas are dynamic, teachers need to constantly update themselves by both regular exposures to interactive conferences and workshop such as this," he said.
Dr. Bala said the government has provided the training opportunity for the teachers to improve quality of learning in schools, as well as to enhance teaching effectiveness for greater learning achievements in pupils.
"This year’s SDGs workshop focuses on Teaching Methods, Classroom Management, Language Communication Skills and ICT Skills," he added.
He stressed the importance of ICT in teaching and learning and encouraged teachers to acquire the skills, to apply it in modern day classrooms.
The Chairman of the Implementation Committee encouraged participants to embrace the culture of life-long learning for them to be relevant in the 21st century.
‘’ For the Institute to have a smooth conduct, everyone involved should perform his or her expected roles and responsibilities as facilitators and support staff,’’ he concluded.
Also speaking at the briefing , the Institute Bursar, Mal. Yunusa Danbala Labaran assured the nominated staff for the exercise of timely payment of their Duty Tour Allowances, specifically before their departure to respective states of assignment.
In the same vein, the Institute’s Ag. Director Academic Services Department, Dr. Oyedeji Mobolaji Omobola and Ag. Director Quality Assurance and ICT Department, Dr. Angela Ozibo have both prayed for the safety of the staff involved in the facilitation of the training.
Meanwhile, a Consultant to the Institute, Dr. Danjuma Sani has urged staff to create awareness on the importance of digitalisation as well as advised them to be security conscious.

The Director and Chief Executive of the National Teachers’ Institute(NTI), Kaduna, Prof. Musa Garba Maitafsir has joined the Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, OON, SAN at the 42nd Session of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)General Conference held in Paris, between November 7 and 11, 2023.
Prof. Maitafsir was in Paris based on invitation through a letter of correspondence , dated September 15, addressed to him and signed by the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Commission for UNESCO.
‘’ NTI being one of the focal agencies in the UNESCO field of competence in Nigeria and expert in education commission,’’ the letter reads.
Having put this into consideration and prioritized the needs of NTI , the Director and Chief Executive, who traveled to Paris alongside Dr. Armiya’u Malami Yabo, Special Assistant to the Director and Chief Executive , ensured that the Institute’s needs in the focus area was clearly defined and reflected during the conference and also pressed to obtain the benefits in terms of attracting UNESCO project to the Institute and Nigerian teachers in general.
Consequently, Prof. Maitafsir secured a training collaboration with UNESCO to organise capacity building workshop for 250 teachers , 50 teachers for each of the five states of Cross-River, Imo, Kaduna, Lagos and Taraba, on Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE), so as to strengthen capacity of in-service teachers , FLHE Desk Officers to deliver Family Life and HIV Education that responds to specific needs of adolescence and young people, including those in humanitarian settings, which will commence by the end of November or early December this year.
Recall that the Institute has a long history of series of collaboration with UNESCO in the area of advancing teacher training and distance education in Nigeria, where they trained thousands of teachers on the use of Mobile Technology in teaching and learning through a programme called ‘’ Mobile Learning Programme.”
Concurrently, the administration has reiterated its commitment to continue partnering with international development partners in the training of Nigerian teachers and ultimate transformation of NTI as an international distance education Institute.
