IN THIS LESSON YOU WILL BE INTRODUCED TO MUSCLES (MOVEMENT).
By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
State the function of muscles.
Describe how antagonistic muscles work.
Describe how our muscles know when they have to move.
Create a poster for awareness about paralysed people.
People can move because there are muscles attached to the skeleton and joints between the bones.
Where do you think humans and animals get the energy to move ??? ............Yes, you are right. From the food that they eat.
Watch the narrated PPT video below to find out more about muscles and how antagonistic muscles work. Then watch the YouTube video for further clarity, which shows a model of the arm to explain how antagonistic muscles work.
MUSCLE CONTRACTIONS MOVE BONES
Animals can move because the contraction or tightening of muscles move different bones in the skeleton. Muscles are controlled by messages from the brain. Sometimes the nerves that transfer messages from the brain get damaged, for example as a result of a car accident or a sports injury. The muscles of a person with such injuries cannot receive messages from the brain. The person is then paralysed and cannot move on his or her own.
FORMAL ASSESSMENT (20 MARKS)
Do some research and find out about:
How paralysed peoples' lives are affected.
How you can help someone get access to a wheelchair, if they do not have one.
Do a half page write up on the information you have found. Make sure to answer the two points above. [ 4 MARKS]
Present all the information that you have found on a poster (A4 size). See the rubric that is attached below (Google Docs) for guidelines on how you will be assessed (click on the blue page icon or open in a new tab). [16 MARKS]
