Bluenose Award
This award formally recognizes a daylily seedling hybridized by an NSDS member in good standing that has shown itself to be of high quality in both plant and flower attributes.
This award is NOT a photography award but is to recognize excellent garden qualities both in the flower and plant habits.
Each submission to the competition must include two pictures of the daylily
One showing a close up of the flower
The second clearly showing the plant branching and bud count with an open flower visible in the picture.
Two pictures are necessary so that both the flower and the plant performance can be evaluated.
For each submission please include key statistics
Flower diameter
Scape height
Bud count
Number of branches
No markings identifying the parents of the seedling should be visible in the picture, nor should there be any markings that might identify the submitter.
To qualify, seedlings will need to be 3 years or older.
This award for the best overall seedling is voted on each year by current NSDS members. Seedlings submitted must be grown in regular or amended garden soil and not in a greenhouse, nor in a pot. This ensures that the seedling has been grown under as normal conditions as possible in the garden. Entries which do not meet these requirements will not be accepted. Limit of 3 entries per member per year.
Entries will be posted on the NSDS website and NSDS members will be able to submit their votes by online ballot. The award will be presented at the March meeting.
Deadline for entry submissions is November 30. Entries will be posted on the website by January 1st and the deadline for submitting votes will be February 28.
A committee appointed by the NSDS executive will pre-screen all entries to ensure that the picture requirements have been adequately met. The identity of the submitter will be kept confidential from the committee. Should the committee decide that the picture requirements have not been adequately met the submitter will be informed by email of the decision and the reason(s) why. The submitter will then have the opportunity to send another set of pictures of the seedling, which fulfills the competition rules.
Please send submissions to nsdsregion4@gmail.com clearly indicating that the submissions are for the NSDS Award.
NSDS will appoint one overall winner, and one runner-up.
