Al-Haif | الحَيْف
A world-building project presented through three illustrated journals of varying sizes that imagine a society shaped by generational neglect, beginning in early childhood and gradually reshaping every system that follows.
Each journal documents a different layer of this world, the human body, the structure of society, and the altered environment,
Presented through the eyes of a scientist studying that world.
Designed as an experimental artist’s book and exploratory graphic novel
In a distant future, parenting has lost its true role, shifting from guidance, which led to a lack of boundaries, discipline, and emotional support. This gradual change went unnoticed across generations; as a result, children grew up without structure, and society declined. This neglect extended to the environment, causing ecological damage and affecting human health.
Now The world exists in a permanent state of repair. Systems still function, cities still operate, and technology remains, yet nothing is truly renewed, creating landscapes of hoarded waste. This reshaped the environment and the human body and played a role in altering the biological development.
The journals are housed within a sleeve that includes a pocket of collected artifacts, including blood tests, brain scans, letters, and material samples, extending the narrative into a larger archival system.
Scientific field journals
Book 01: Human anatomy and adaptation
Book 02: Human anatomy and adaptation
Book 03: Environmental and biological collapse
The books are designed using a clean, structured layout supported by a grid system. I used detailed, scientific-style illustrations combined with minimal text to create clarity and allow the illustrations to communicate most of the information.
Book 01
Human anatomy and adaptation
focuses on the human body, documenting how it has gradually adapted to harsh conditions, revealing changes in anatomy, biology, and overall function caused by prolonged neglect
Book 02
Social behavior and communication
Focuses on society, documenting how relationships, communication, and daily interactions have changed as people adapt to survival and the absence of stable care systems.
Book 03
Environmental and biological collapse
focuses on the environment, showing how plants, animals, and ecosystems have adapted or deteriorated under long-term environmental stress and neglect.
The books also incorporates interactive elements such as pop ups, transparencies, and layered pages that invite active reading and discovery.
Al-Haif uses graphic design as both storytelling and investigation, inviting viewers to piece together a society reshaped by absence, a world that has forgotten how to raise itself.
The video shows how the project is meant to be experienced. It highlights the interaction with the books, including the layered pages and artifacts, and how these elements work together to reveal the world and communicate the story.
