Cam is identified in the Stroud Local Plan as one of the four main settlements within the District, along with Stroud, Stonehouse and Dursley, the latter of which adjoins the south of Cam.
The proposed site is located to the north-west of Cam, between the A4135 and M5 and comprises approximately 39 hectares of agricultural land.
In terms of surroundings, the site is bounded by the M5 and the cross-country railway line to the north, to the south and east by the A4135 and residential properties, and to the west by the Jubilee Playing Fields.
The site is dissected by two public right of way's, with a public right of way also running adjacent to the site alongside Everside Lane and north alongside the M5.
The site lies outside of restrictive environmental designations, and is located in flood zone 1, the Environment Agency's lowest category of flood risk.
