Welcome to the North Suburban Carvers
Thank You for your interest in the North Suburban Carvers. The "North Suburban Carvers" was established in 1979 through the efforts of Mr. Joe Veracka and five of his students. Social group carving has produced generations of ethusiastic woodcarvers.
The club is composed of men and women and families of all ages and various backgrounds who are involved in woodcarving as a creative art form. We also have a few junior carvers, our members range in age from 6 to 90. Beginners are especially welcome to join us and learn how to safely hold and handle tools and make basic cuts from our special teaching seminars and more advanced carvers.
The purpose of the North Suburban Carvers is:
To promote the art of woodcarving, providing guidance and assistance to novice as well as experienced carvers:
To stimulate interest in every aspect of woodcarving by the presentation of demonstrations, seminars, and hands on participation.
To broaden community interest in woodcarving as a creative art form through demonstrations and exhibition of our work at public showings and special events.
To create and sell woodcarvings to raise funds to be contributed to recognized local area children's charities.
To act as Trustee and Executor for escrow memorial funds designated for scholarships to woodcarving seminars. This fund was established in memory of Mr. Joe Veracka and other departed members.
Membership is open to all who share an interest in and appreciation of the skills and beauty of woodcarving. Our annual dues are only $30.00 or $45.00 for a family membership. This includes all membership privileges, i.e., meeting attendance, special events and seminars, use of the club library and a monthly newsletter. It's the best bargin in town.
Our meetings are bi-monthly on the first and third Monday of each month,(unless changed due to a holiday) at the Wood Dale Public Library. 520 N. Wood Dale Road, Wood Dale, Illinois 60191.
Meetings are always interesting and fun. We feature demonstrations, lectures, raffles, and a "show and tell" on a regular basis. There is always great conversation among old and new friends. You can arrive anytime after 6 PM to carve and visit with our members who delight in sharing their techniques and tips with others. Sometimes we have a guest speaker or a special demonstration. At any meeting members can check out books from our club library.
Our members join other carvers in the Midwest by traveling to classes or exhibit events. some enter their works into competition for ribbons and cash awards. Carvers compete in many categories, and special exhibitor awards. Exhibitions offer the opportunity to discuss carving techniques with hundreds of visitors who come to view these marvelous works of art.
We have many carvers exhibiting, with sales and demonstrations at the DuPage County Fair each year. One of our most popular features of the four day event is the ornament sale. Our members carve and donate their works of art and ornaments to be sold to the public; the proceeds of this sale are then donated to the Shriners Children's Hospital.
You are cordially invited to attend any of our meetings . Please feel free to call any club officer, if you have any questions about the North Suburban Carvers, we welcome your interest.
