District: Uptown - Partial Control

Rating: Non-Contributing
Applicant: EDR Architects
Description: Demolition of more than 50% of the exterior wall structure at a Non-Contributing, three-story, education building.
Staff Recommendations:
Based on FEMA Survey research 7224 Dominican Street was constructed from 1960-1970, outside the period of significance for the Uptown Historic District.
The three-story building is designed in the International Style which was prevalent in the mid-20th century. Flat pitched roofs with strong horizontal fenestration lines proliferated this style. Metal curtain walls with punches of glass are an indicative hallmark to the building style's vocabulary. Much like the expansive growth during the Restoration period, the architecture created in the modernist style in the mid-20th century was a signal of change and growth for the future.
While this style is not a hallmark of Classic New Orleans style architecture, it is in fact recognized around the world. The building's delicate aluminum frame work appears to be in relatively good condition with adjacent opaque panels in fair to good condition.
This building is not in full control but any alterations to the materiality of the facades would change the language and history of this building with reference to it's historical context. For this reason Staff can not recommend the demolition of more than 50% of the exterior wall framing.
Staff Recommendation: Denial of demolition of more than 50% of the exterior wall framing.
