The Need for a Coordinated Effort
New Mexico's housing challenges have reached a scale that demands a coordinated statewide response.
Across the state, families are struggling to find homes they can afford, communities are facing housing shortages, existing housing stock is aging, and many residents remain at risk of housing instability. At the same time, employers are finding it difficult to attract and retain workers, schools are seeing the effects of housing instability on students and families, and local governments are grappling with rising costs and growing demand for services.
Many organizations and communities are working to address these challenges; our goal is to bring everyone together to develop a comprehensive statewide housing strategy that aligns local priorities with state policy, funding, and long-term planning.
Through research, data analysis, and engagement with residents, tribal communities, local governments, housing providers, developers, businesses, educators, faith-based, and community organizations, and other stakeholders, we will identify the policies, investments, and partnerships needed to expand housing opportunities across the state and craft a statewide housing plan.
The goal is to create a practical roadmap that helps New Mexico increase housing supply, preserve existing homes, improve housing affordability, strengthen thriving communities, and support educational outcomes and economic prosperity for future generations.
