In this presentation Kerry Bone will explore in detail the key considerations behind the safe and effective use of herbs in patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. The information provided is based on a comprehensive review of the literature from mainstream journals and, while being highly evidence-based, is also filtered through the prism of the Functional Herbal Therapy system.
• Why do it and what to aim for, is it just to support energy and immunity or are we aiming at additional outcomes?
• Important background issues, including the challenge of cancer stem cells and role of terrain in cancer
• Diet around chemotherapy, and some important misconceptions about the ketogenic diet
• Potential herb-drug interactions
• What are the key herbs and what is the evidence supporting their use?
• Addressing some key extra considerations, such as risk of metastasis
• Timing: which herbs are best before, during and after chemotherapy?
• What herbs are best avoided during actual chemotherapy dosing?
The presentation will take around 1 hour followed by 30 minutes of questions, discussion and worked cases. Please bring a case to discuss.
Research is pointing to the fundamental role of maintaining and enhancing cellular health as an overriding principle behind healthy ageing. Hence, knowing the pathways that govern cellular health becomes fundamental to selecting the pivotal herbs for healthy ageing. Such an understanding is also highly relevant for preventing and treating arterial disease, which remains a significant cause of death and disability in our communities, despite all the research advances and the billions of dollars spent by drug companies. The famous Framingham Heart Study led to a focus in terms of drugs for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. But as we have read and seen, the issues are complex and controversial. And is this really the full picture?
Achieving clarity among this confusion must also take into account the new thinking about what typically triggers a heart attack and stroke, and the relatively recently discovered roles of vulnerable plaque and coronary microvascular dysfunction.
Also, it is time to stop thinking about IHD as being predominately a ‘male’ disease. In fact, more women than men now die from IHD annually in the developed world. Despite this, IHD is often misunderstood, under-diagnosed and under-treated in women, which adds significantly to their morbidity and mortality.
In this two-part presentation from Professor Kerry Bone you will learn:
• The key issues behind general disease prevention and healthy ageing as the most important strategy for preventing and managing heart disease
• How to utilise our phytochemical molecular tool kit to achieve this via hormetic responses, Nrf2, mitochondrial therapy, resolving chronic inflammation and supporting endothelial and microcirculatory health
• What really causes arterial disease, with a focus on inflammation and endothelial health
• The inflammatory role of cholesterol crystals and environmental toxins in IHD
• What really triggers heart attacks and strokes and the key role of stress
• The paradoxes evident with regard to sex differences in IHD and the unique risk factors that apply to women
• Key interventions to stabilise vulnerable plaque
• Regressing plaque with diet is proven to be possible
• Some highly clinically relevant herbs that might surprise you, together with some newer options
• Functional herbal therapy strategies with example protocols
