Purpose
We are forming a small, reliable neighborhood communications group for use during power outages, wildfire events, and other emergencies. GMRS radios function independently of cell towers and internet service, allowing communication when traditional systems are unavailable.
This workshop is for neighbors with genuine interest in participating.
Workshop Overview
• Small group (goal: 6–10 households)
• Hands-on instruction using GMRS radios
• Radios programmed specifically for Nina Terrace
• Connected to a neighborhood repeater
• Live practice transmitting and receiving messages
• Simplified quick-reference guide provided
Participant Requirements
Participants must be willing to:
• Purchase at least one $50 radio per household
• Obtain a $35 FCC GMRS Family License (valid for 10 years, covers all family members, no test required)
• Participate in voluntary monthly radio check-ins
• Use the radio periodically to maintain readiness and confidence
Why Monthly Check-Ins Matter
• Confirm batteries are charged
• Test transmission distance within the neighborhood
• Maintain comfort using the radio
• Troubleshoot and learn as a group
Commitment Structure
$25 commitment fee to attend
We will:
• Purchase a radio for your use during the workshop
• Program it for Nina Terrace channels
• Connect it to the neighborhood repeater
• Provide hands-on instruction
At the end of the workshop:
• Pay the remaining $25 to keep your programmed radio (total radio cost approximately $50), or
• Return the radio and receive your $25 refunded
