Living in the Santa Cruz mountains comes with a variety of hazards. One of the hazards being loss of communications. We will discuss in this document how to communicate with neighbors and family if there is a breakdown in the cellular system or the land line telephone system.
A local community radio communication system is an ideal community managed solution but does come with some challenges considering our heavy tree cover and rugged terrain.
We have deployed two overlapping systems with plans for expansion. The two systems cover these functions:
Voice: General Mobile Radio System (GMRS) allows voice communications with over a mile range that is extended with repeaters. The system is inexpensive and easy to use.
Text: Meshtastic is an ad hoc communication system using the LoRa 902MHz to 928MHz band with signal encoding such that it has exceptional range and noise immunity. The Mestastic system sends and receives text messages with an app on your phone or computer much like how you would typically send text messages.
