Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Artifact: Assessment Creation and Analysis

Project: In my educational psychology course I constructed a 10 question test based on one chapter of our textbook (Educational Psychology, Fourteenth Edition by Anita Woolfolk.) that could be used as a summative assessment for this chapter. My test consisted of 8 multiple choice questions and 2 short response essay questions, which I learned are types of selected-response tests. By constructing this test, I learned how to incorporate Bloom's Taxonomy into creating questions and to form questions that put material into practice. I didn't just ask participants to identify the correct definition of terms, but rather used a application level questions. When making the two short response questions I learned to identify what criteria I would use to grade responses and analyze student's responses to see if they are practical and acceptable.
In analyzing the results of the test, in which I had 16 total participants, I was able to identify and put into practice norm-reference testing and compare my participants raw scores with those of the norm group. I learned to use calculate the median, mode, standard deviation, z-score and t-scores based on the results of the test. I was also able to use the data, to identify if students met the learning objectives and areas of opportunity that I could do better in when teaching the material.
means being a reflective teacher and continually looking for opportunities to better your instruction. With this project, test and analysis of the results, I am able to put into practice identifying how students performed both overall and on individual questions. I could use this data to see if students are meeting the learning targets presented by the Illinois Learning Standards and if they aren't use it as an opportunity to find ways in my teaching to help them reach those. I am able to identify where I need to change my instruction or spend time with certain topics.
This project and test is just one example of a formal assessment that I would use in the classroom. Based on the results of the test, which Google nicely presents in a spreadsheet for me, I then calculated the student's score and percentage, found the whole class mean and median and the standard deviation. These results allow me to see, if this was from a real elementary, students who need a little more assistance and support, if I could have done teaching the content and which topics in the unit were challenging and which were understood better.
With this project I created my test in Google Forms and sent it out to classmates to take. In the classroom, I could also use Google Forms and rather than email the link to my students it could post the assignment in Google Classroom. This would integrate the use of technology in my classroom. Google Forms is great because it will automatically generate a spreadsheet in Google Sheets with all the data that is needed to analyze the results, see individual student's responses and be able to see where I have areas of opportunity to teach content differently.
Artifact: Using assessment to drive student learning
Grade: 5th
Project: This artifact involves a chapter midpoint quiz from my student teaching experience. Once students completed the quiz, my cooperating teacher and I went through the item analysis to determine if highly missed questions could be the result of a poorly worded question or if we felt like the content needs to be revisited in the future. From this assessment, I was able to pinpoint supports that I could incorporate into the classroom moving forward. From areas of opportunity that I identified within the assessment, we revisited those the following day.
