Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge – The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
Artifact: Geometry activity centers
Grade: 2
Project: The purpose of this project was to show our ability to apply content area knowledge to an appropriate grade band. Upon selection of a grade and NCTM standard, the object was to create four different activity centers that met the chosen standard and principles. I chose geometry for K-2, specifically gearing my activity centers for a 2nd grade classroom. Below is a Google slides presentation describing and modeling the activity centers and what materials would be used. In the presentation, there are videos demonstrating the mathematical content. To elaborate on how this project shows my content area and pedagogical knowledge, I have included a reflection paper talking more in depth of how my activities supported student learning and a description of the NCTM Geometry standard including what learning expectations were met.

Artifact: Water cycle science unit
Grade: 4th
Project: The focus of this project is the water cycle. The work below demonstrates my ability to explain my science content area knowledge to the students via hands on experiments. This artifact follows NGSS and fosters a curiosity about the water cycle which is an important part of science curriculum. It is important to teach the water cycle with a hands on experiment because it visually brings the science to life. Students are able to make connections of how this relates to other science relationships.
