Personal project | Spring 2023
What it is: A thirteen-second motion graphic of a biplane flying across a summery background of rolling hills.
What I did: I produced the background elements in Adobe Illustrator, then modeled the biplane and animated everything in Blender.
Why it's included: Over the last year I've gained significant skills and experience with Blender for 3D modeling. I've had this clip cooking for some time -- trying to do it all in 2D didn't turn out how I wanted it to -- but Blender gave me the tools to really bring it to life. I see this project as a significant win, and a validation that I can engage with 3D motion graphics on the professional level.
Personal project | Summer-Fall 2022
What it is: A handful of short animations that I made on my own time to help sharpen my After Effects skills.
What I did: I produced all of the assets for these clips in Adobe Illustrator, and animated them with After Effects.
Why it's included: I find shorts like these to be a great way to showcase my skills in certain areas of After Effects use, my talent for animation timing and composition, and the energy and personality with which I animate. At the end of the day, it's the best way to practice motion graphics and exercise a good creative outlet.
Client project | The New Media Incubator | Spring 2022
What it is: An animation of the Parallax Advanced Research logo, to be used in official productions.
What I did: Using After Effects I produced the entire animation from an existing static logo. It was refined in a series of feedback cycles.
Why it's included: Animated logo design comes with its own challenges compared to longer motion graphic projects. In this project I found it challenging to keep the timing consistent within such a brief runtime, and was working frame-by-frame and half-second-by-half-second to work out the pacing. Overall, this was a breeze of a project and I'm very pleased with the final result.
Personal project | Fall 2020
What it is: A six-second soundless video, something of an e-card, made as a personal project for no reason other than just to practice Adobe. (I was also on a '90s design kick at the time, if you couldn't tell.)
What I did: I produced the elements from scratch in Adobe Illustrator, and animated them in After Effects.
Why it's included: I think it's really important for content creators to put some free time toward low-stakes mini-projects like these from time to time. They're a great way to practice skills, and a good outlet for creative designs that you might not get to experiment with during work hours. Though this was only a small practice exercise that I put out in an afternoon, I'm still really happy with the result.
