As a young professional with six years of experience working with digital media and instructional design, my ultimate goal is to enter the Edtech industry and become an instructional designer. I believe in the power of digital media to instruct, inspire, and empower students and professionals all over the world -- a goal that I know is shared by the broader Edtech industry.
The world stands on the brink of an AI-powered future, in which machine-created sights, sounds, words, and ideas mingle with those of real people and real minds. Tools that are used to mislead and misinform, I believe, can be leveraged instead to uplift and support the causes of massive, open, online education. I and many other digital media professionals find our career prospects threatened by this shift in the workforce toward AI. I'll be the first to admit that I'm scared -- but nevertheless, I am determined to be there to witness this societal change in real-time, and to do my part to ensure AI generation is not the death of truth. I believe that the Edtech industry is where I can be of most use to see this objective through. As you look through my portfolio and my resume, I'm confident you'll see me for the skilled and driven professional that I am, and that you'll agree I'll be a bright new addition to your instructional design team. I look forward to working with you!
Adobe Suite - I am proficient with Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator. I also have a basic knowledge of Audition.
Techsmith Camtasia - I am deeply familiar with Camtasia for motion graphic production, and have produced most of my work with it. For instances that call for animations that Camtasia is not built for, I make use of After Effects and pull the result into Camtasia.
Microsoft Office suite - I make frequent use of Word for complex document design, and Excel for data organization. I have basic familiarity with Publisher.
Blender - I am currently independently learning Blender for 3D modeling and simulation, as a progression of my media production skills.
Other software - I recognize and use other media production tools on the off-chance that the above aren't able to achieve my desired result. Audition is often useful for direct recording and simple manipulation of computer audio. I'm also familiar with the open-source art program Paint.NET for non-vector art and image manipulation.
Research - Often I am required to learn about unfamiliar and complex subjects to create content about them; I am skilled in tracking down official sources and building a bank of information, becoming more and more familiar with a subject as I work.
Rewriting and restructuring - Once I have the information I need on a subject, I am proficient at recontextualizing the subject, getting to the heart of the matter to make it easier to understand. In this way, the content I create employs easily understandable representative motion graphics that concisely illustrate the material at hand.
Genre analysis - In creating content, it is an invaluable skill to be able to analyze who is looking at that content, where, why, and how. I can perform complex genre analyses of content to be created in order to ensure the finished product is precisely crafted to suit the needs of the client.
Problem-solving - When working with various softwares for media creation, each with different use cases and capabilities, I am skilled at finding elegant, simple workarounds to setbacks using different combinations of software and tools.
Motion graphics - The bulk of my body of work consists of engaging, high-energy animated graphics for illustrating complex concepts. I believe in the power of multimodality for instructional design, employing sound, color, and imagery in motion to supplement instruction wherever possible.
Scriptwriting - When writing scripts for videos and slide decks, I recognize the need for concision, and am able to put together clean, neat, crystal-clear scripts for genres ranging from academia to marketing.
Slide deck design - My skill with motion graphics lends itself to Microsoft PowerPoint well, and I'm proficient at assembling slide decks that combine text with clean visuals. I'm experienced with the logistics of presentations (I could hardly have gotten through grad school otherwise!) and my approach to slide design has always been to illustrate the speaker's points -- not to be a cue card for them to read off of.
Video editing - I'm proficient at cutting and sequencing footage to find the clearest and most concise visual narratives. I manage audio editing and motion graphics for a polished final product.
Instructional design - All of my skills combine with a deep knowledge of instructional design concepts: how best to employ document design, motion graphics, and multimodal composition to convey information to the viewer, listener, or reader.
