For our graduating class, we have a couple extra events and surprises throughout the year

• Meet your Middle School Principal: It is quite a transition between elementary and middle school. Each year, the school invites the middle school principals to Northern Heights so students (and families) can meet their future principal, find out which school they'll be attending (and which friends will be going to a different school), ask questions about what life in middle school is like, and learn about what will be different after they leave their primary years behind them.

• Legacy Wall: Each year, a new art installment is added to the fence wall in front of our school to immortalize the names of our longest and oldest students. All year, the design is kept top secret, and only revealed to a select few who proofread the names of every 5th grade student. At the end of the year, there is a celebration and grand reveal of the art piece. While the creation of the art is donated generously, the cost of the material has increased over the years. Previously, the PTO has funded the difference. To continue this amazing legacy, we are asking 5th grade families to purchase their student's name. No student will be left out though, as the PTO will continue to step in and make sure each student's name will still appear in the art.

• 5th Grade Celebration: An end of your send off to our 5th graders and the reveal of this year's Legacy Wall installation.

Events for Families

August

• Popsicles with the Principals: Hang out with the Principals, discover who your student's new teacher is, connect with new classmates, meet other families, and greet past friends you haven't seen all summer. Play on the playground and cool off with some popsicles.

• Meet and Greet: Tour your student's new classroom, meet their teacher, and connect with fellow classmates and their families

September

• Huskies in Motion: Our MAJOR fundraiser for the entire year. A blow-out move-a-thon where families, neighbors, and friends come to cheer on students, high-five our mascot, and show school pride. 

October

• Open House: Peek into classrooms, glimpse what students have been working on, tour the music and PE rooms, and meet your student's teachers and new friends

• Pumpkin Decorating Night: A community gathering of fun, where kids can get just a bit messy with paint and stickers. Hang out and re-connect with families and friends.

January

• Art Show Hallway Walk: Take a tour through the halls of Northern Heights to view the amazing artwork produced by our students

February

• Bingo Night: Hang out with other families for a night packed with fun and prizes.

March

• Family Math Night: Sounds nerdy, but kids LOVE this event and showing off their math skills in a fun-filled evening with friends and families.

April

• Welcome to Middle School (5th grade): Middle school principals come to Northern Heights to answer questions and greet their incoming students and families.

May

• Bike/Walk to School: School-wide commute using bikes, scooters, wheelchairs, carpools, buses, and feet. We focus on the community feeling of coming to school together.

• Staff Appreciation Week: It's been a long year and our amazing staff have been amazing. We share our appreciation with a week of gratitude notes from students and families, potluck treats, some free coffee, and a catered lunch (check out the Corporate Sponsors' page for who's made this possible).

• Allied Art Show Walk (downtown Bellingham): Annual event that showcases artwork of our students, alongside the artwork of several other schools in our community, in a weeks long art show in downtown Bellingham at participating local businesses: https://www.alliedarts.org/may-childrens-art-walk/

• Field Day: A school day filled with outdoor stations the encourage active fun, teamwork, and camaraderie; spearheaded by our wonderful PE teacher

June

• 5th Grade Family Event: A graduation of sorts that celebrates our oldest students, congratulates them on all they've accomplished, and sends them off on their next major adventure (Middle School!)

Events for Grown-ups

PTO meetings in the Northern Heights Library allow parents and caregivers to hear updates about the school and learn from guest speakers about district resources and policies. Anyone can attend, ask questions, share ideas, and help shape the experiences our students have throughout the year. It’s a relaxed, welcoming space (with snacks) to stay informed, get connected, and partner with staff and other families to support our Husky community.

Parenting Classes are for parents, family members, and caregivers interested to engage with fellow families and experts about their parenting journey and current topics impacting our students.

Let's Talk About Parenting (see Tandem calendar for dates & times)

• Joint partnership with Bellingham Technical College and hosted by Ann Marie Read. Come and learn about common parent topics and engage in discussion with other parents and families with a loved local facilitator.

• Staff Appreciation Week
