I recently took my first ever visit to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Labor Day weekend and I had an absolute BLAST! This park gets a lot of hate, saying their operations aren't good, the food isn't good, and the park was poorly kept up. I completely disagree with these in my experience.
It was a Saturday on Labor Day weekend, and I made my way out to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom while on a California trip to visit family. As it was a holiday weekend and a Saturday, I did get The Flash Pass Ultimate so that I could skip the lines for unlimited rides. I got to the park at opening, which was 11AM that day, and I started by making my way to The Flash: Vertical Velocity, which had just reopened after a multiple year closure. I didn't know this had reopened and I was super excited when I saw it running as I was walking into the park. I got my first lap on it in the back row, and absolutely loved it! It was my first Intamin Impulse coaster, and what a way to kick it off with this weird Intamin. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has a 150 foot height limit, and they tried to sneak past it, but the city of Vallejo caught them, and they decided to tilt the spike.
After Flash, I made my way to Batman: The Ride, which broke down while I was in line, so I bailed went over to Superman: Ultimate Flight, a Premier Rides SkyRocket 2, the first of it's kind to open. This one only has 2 cars on the train, and most other SkyRocket 2 coasters have 3 cars, like the ones in the United Parks chain (Formerly SeaWorld). My first ride on it was in the back row, and I really enjoyed it! Had some good airtime and hangtime, and overall was better then I thought it would be.
After Superman, I made my way to The Joker, which is an RMC hybrid coaster that was created from the old Roar wooden coaster. This coaster is known for being more focused on inversions then airtime, which is unlike most RMC coasters. I didn't have too high expectations for Joker as I know it is most people's least favorite RMC, but wow! Joker is epic! It has some good airtime and hangtime and pretty good whip! My first ride was in the back row and I loved it!
After Joker, Batman reopened so I went over there. This is an S&S freespin coaster. Some people complain about how they never get flips, but I flipped A TON! Way more than I did on Tumbili at Kings Dominion. I had a really good time on Batman: The Ride and I think these coasters are underrated.
After Batman, I made my way out of DC Universe and went for their spinning Zamperla Wild Mouse coaster, Sidewinder Safari. I rode with a very off balanced car and got some decent spinning in the 2nd half when the cars unlocked. I didn't like Sidewinder Safari as much as I liked Wild Mouse at Cedar Point, but it was still pretty good.
Sadly, Boomerang: Coast to Coaster was closed when I visited. It has been closed for a long time now and I figured it would still be closed, but I was kind of holding up hope for it. The train wasn't even on the tracks! I later found it in the back area by Joker.
After I finished checking out Boomerang, I went to lunch at Primo's Pizzeria by The Shark Encounter, which is near Loony Tunes land. I love pizza so naturally I ate here. The slices of pizza were MASSIVE, so I only got one slice with a side of garlic knots. That was plenty of food for me and I loved it! It tasted really good.
After lunch, I made my way to Medusa, a B&M floorless coaster. I had pretty high expectations for this ride as people always call it one of the best floorless coasters out there. I rode it twice in the back row, and I loved it! It definetly lived up to my expectations. At some points, it did have a rattle, but it didn't take away from the overall ride experience. One thing I noticed was that Medusa was only running 2 trains, as the other was in pieces on the ground under the maintenance shed, although because I had Flash Pass, it didn't really make that much of a difference for me.
After Medusa, I went to Cobra, their Zierer Tivoli coaster with a MASSIVE 20 row train! I rode in row 20 and thought the ride was decent. Although the clearances were hilariously low, it got so close to the ground to the point where I could touch it during the ride, also, the bushes near the ride were pretty close. This ride was kinda janky, but in a good way!
After Cobra, I made my way to the coaster I was not excited to ride in the park, Kong, a Vekoma SLC. It ended up not being too bad. The only moments of the ride I got headbanging were in the Sidewinder and the double in-line twists, I definitely liked this one more than Flight Deck at Canada's Wonderland, but it wasn't as smooth as Thunderhawk at Michigan's Adventure.
After Kong, I went back to DC universe for re-rides on everything there, got another ride on Flash, 3 more on Joker, 3 more on Superman, and another one on Batman. I ended up leaving the park at 6pm after an amazing day!
