Interferon alpha and beta
Mechanism of action:
- Naturally occurring cytokine, reduces inflammatory response.
- Interferon beta-1a alpha
- Interferon alfa-interferon alpha-2 a is also a naturally occurring cytokine and increases the inflammatory response. It is used in the treatment of hepatitis C it is reported to also cause autoimmune disease.
Uses

Adverse events
- Interferon beta 1 is well-tolerated. Sometimes causes skin reactions.
- Interferon alpha-2 causes minor side effects such as fatigue, fever, malaise and myalgia and arthralgias.
Treatment regimens
- Interferon beta 1: 22 to 44 mcg subcutaneously thrice a week.
- Interferon alfa 2, 3 mu twice a week.
