The current UFT contract runs until November 28, 2027.
If Contracts were better organized, chapter leaders would say: "here is the official UFT contract. It's all there in this one document. Easy."
That is not the case.
There is an official UFT contract that includes agreements valid up through 2019, including correspondance between Joel Klein and Randi Weingarten, but that contract doesn't include any agreements from more recent negotiations.
We have Memorandum's of Agreement from the last two contract negotiations (2019 and 2022), but these MOA's don't include agreements from the previous contracts. That's why to truly know your rights, you must have access to all.
UFT Teacher Contracts:
UFT Teacher's Contract 2022-2027 MOA
UFT Teacher's Contract 2019-2022 MOA
UFT Teacher's Contract (up until 2019)
Why does this matter?
Well, for one, salary increases only happen as a result of contract negotiations. Yes, there are steps and differentials (from previous agreements), and yes, technically salaries increase regardless of contract as you move down (up?) that salary ladder, but that is a simplistic and short sighted view!
Once you've taught for 22 years there are no more steps, and so your only raises occur as a result of negotiations. Maybe you're a new teacher and 22 years feels impossible far off, so you don't care. I hear you! I've been there! And now this is my 18th year. I want to see salaries continue to increase significantly in future negotiations.
Contracts also make clear the rights that you are entitled to, like a duty free lunch, no more than 3 teaching periods in a row (where administratively possible), Parental leave (not long enough, but better than nothing at all), and more.
Sometimes rights are diminished through negotiations as well, so it is in your best interest to remain informed, and keep that from happening.
