The main reason for an administrator to observe lessons and provide evidence-based feedback is to drive changes in teacher practice and teacher effectiveness. Frequent observation with feedback is essential and is most useful when most observations are short, unannounced, and followed by brief, focused reflective conversations. While a scheduled observation should be at least 20 minutes in duration, unscheduled observations of 10 - 12 minutes can provide useful evidence to drive powerful conversations about practice.
As a reminder, direct observation is mandatory for one of the evidence sources for each Standard and Indicator on the educator's evaluation (plus one confirmatory evidence source). Direct observation of teacher practice occurs when the evaluator is in the classroom or venue where the teacher is present and teaching. Evidence does not include possibilities, inferences, suppositions, suggestions, guesses, likelihoods, or predictions. Not all Standards and Indicators may be observed during shorter observations, even in scheduled observations longer than 20 minutes, so it is usually necessary to observe a teacher multiple times to evaluate educator performance.
The vignettes provided in this section demonstrate the use of various instructional standards and indicators in an elementary classroom. While they are specific to a variety of subjects taught in elementary classrooms, the grade level and/or subject area should not be a factor in viewing a specific video/vignette. The intent is to gain an understanding of the evidence of each Standard/Indicator and effective instructional practices used in all classroom settings.
To complete this section:
Download the NEPF IRR Tool*.
Review the NEPF Instructional Practice Standards.
Read at least two of the linked vignettes (below) demonstrating the use of high-leverage instructional practices.
Identify the standards and indicators demonstrated in each vignette (observation notes) using the provided NEPF IRR Tool (complete one tool for each vignette).
Compare your observation notes on the NEPF IRR Tool with the Master Notes provided for each vignette. (The Master Notes may include a score rating based on the evidence found in the vignette for training purposes; however, a teacher should NOT receive a score during an actual classroom observation. A performance score should only be assigned on a summative evaluation after multiple observations.)
Complete the assessment (requires course participants to upload their observation notes - completed IRR tools. A minimum of two must be submitted to complete Section 2 - one for each vignette reviewed).
*Note: The NEPF IRR Tool is designed to allow for course participants to work individually and/or to collaborate with a partner/group to ensure consistency and build consensus among evaluators on observed instructional practices.
Elementary Vignettes:
Choose two (2) of the following vignettes to read, completing a NEPF IRR Tool for each one reviewed:
Vignette 1: Art - Grade 5
Vignette 2: ELA - Grade 1
Vignette 3: Math - K
Vignette 4: Math - Grades 1 and 2
Vignette 5: PE - Grade 5
Elementary Vignettes Master Notes:
Compare your observation notes (completed IRR tool/s) with the Master Notes provided:
Complete the Section 2 Assessment.
