Coastlines and People – Charting Community Futures in a Time of Surprises
March 17, 2021
Goal: This project brings together community leaders and academic researchers to advance visionary thinking and build thriving Gulf of Maine coastal communities amid long-term coastal change (to 2100 and beyond). Our region has many organizations and projects building bridges between community needs and science, but some see a need for deeper and broader networking. While climate adaptation efforts are currently quite strong in many of our communities, this year has provided us with many examples of unanticipated surprises that test the breadth of these plans, not just in climate but also in social-economic factors.
Objectives:
How do you see the future of the coastal communities in which you live and work?
How has your thinking changed due to the many unexpected events of the past year?
What are some knowledge gaps or areas for further learning?
How do you see science and technology helping?
Welcome and Introduction

Visioning Activity & Breakout Groups
For most of us, the last year has brought innumerable unexpected events. How do these experiences change the way we think about the future of our communities?
What has your community learned about adapting to surprises?
Have your values, opportunities, and concerns changed when looking at the future?
How do we continue to build thriving communities with respect to economic, climate, and social change?
What are the needs and opportunities that you are seeing? What are some challenges or hurdles? How can science and scientists help?
Plenary Discussion
What kinds of strategies and resources could overcome these challenges and hurdles? What needs to be done? What roadmaps do we need?
What groups or organizations might have expertise or capacity relevant for these purposes (now or in the future)?
What specific programs, knowledge, information, skills, trainings, education, internships, research, data, jobs, or internships that could potentially help provide this capacity?
