Give us feedback!
This experience is not meant to shame or guilt any director, but it is meant to encourage thought, reflection, discussion and change.
Every three to six months, give yourself 30 mins in a quiet space to sit and reflect on the following questions:
1-What literature have my ensembles worked on in the past three months? What is the identifying race, gender, age and nationality of each composer? In what ways do my literature choices reflect the student body at my school, my community, my state, my country and the modern world?
2-Who else has entered my room (whether physically or digitally) in the past three months besides my students and myself? In what ways are my guests supporting gender equality?
3-In the last three months, how many discussions have I had with my students where gender equality has surfaced intentionally? Unintentionally? Which of my students have demonstrated through class discussion that they seem to be very aware of and support the need to work for gender equality? Which of my students have not demonstrated through class discussion that they are aware of the support the need to work for gender equality?
4-What effort is my school doing in SDG5? How can I better support and champion those efforts?
5-Share your reflections with a colleague, mentor, your students and/or your community. Invite them to do the same!
