With Katrina Moore, YSC Coordinator at Newcomer Academy in Jefferson County.
While the multilingual (ML) student population grows statewide, so does the challenge in knowing how to serve ML families well. As FRYSC, we want to create a welcoming and culturally responsive atmosphere in our schools. But knowing how to do so sensitively and effectively can be difficult sometimes when we don’t ask (or don’t feel comfortable asking) the right questions. Join us in this session where we begin to unpack this topic in a judgment-free and collaborative space.

It can also boost funding, reduce schools' administrative burden, and streamline eligibility for school meals and Summer EBT. Feeding Kentucky can offer support, guidance, and a 'menu' of options to help schools create a plan for SNAP outreach that best meets the capacity and needs of staff, students, and families. This session will cover the basics of SNAP and how a little outreach can go a long way to help your schools!

An abundance of research has demonstrated that fathers not only have a significant influence on the life outcomes of their children but also play a unique and indispensable role in their educational and cognitive development. Despite this growing awareness of the need to involve fathers in the care of their children, many family service providers struggle to connect with fathers. This webinar will focus on the importance of including fathers in the developmental and academic domains of their children’s life, address some of the common barriers to engaging fathers, and offer strategic methods for recruitment, especially highlighting the Commonwealth Center for Fathers and Families Mini-Grants program as an opportunity for collaboration.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI, 2022), one in six US adolescents experience a major depressive episode (MDE) each year and almost four million young adults have had serious thoughts of suicide. These statistics coupled with the devastation of natural disasters in Kentucky in less than two years raised concern on how to meet youth where they are and begin to build capacity around the support provided during times of stress and disaster. Kentucky 4-H engaged in a partnership with 7Dippity, Inc. to survey the needs of our state related to copy and resiliency. The resource Youth Strong: Helping Youth and Families in Times of Disaster and Stress was developed to provide an easily implemented youth-adult resource to encourage ways to cope and move forward during potentially traumatic times. Help us drive this initiative forward by attending the Wednesday Webinar where we will give you more details, share the resource, and supplemental training opportunities for you to receive the resource to disseminate to the communities you work in.
