The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional honorary Society of women educators. It is comprised of key women educators from many areas including preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, college and university, as well as district and state levels. Members include a variety of educators such as classroom teachers, school administrators, counselors, librarians and retirees. The organization was founded on May 11, 1929 at The University of Texas in Austin, Texas at the Faculty Women's Club. Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, a member of the faculty and a former state superintendent of public instruction in Texas, conceived the idea of an organization for women educators. She selected eleven women educators from Texas, representing various professional positions in education, to join her. Dr. Blanton initiated these eleven women and the first chapter of DKG was formed. Alpha Chapter was installed on June 3, 1929. These twelve founders believed there was a need for an organization in which women educators might unite their efforts toward better professional preparation, recognition of women's work in the teaching profession, and scholarships for those needing aid in improving their professional preparation.
The Society is structured in three levels: local (known as chapters), state organization (known as states, territories, provinces, or comparable political divisions in countries where DKG is organized) and international. The terms "international" and/or "Society" refers to the overall organization as a whole. State organizations are grouped into regions. There are five regions in our Society and they include Europe, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest. There are a total of 17 countries having members that comprise our Society. These countries include the United States, Canada, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Guatemala, Iceland, The Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Great Britain, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Germany, Estonia, Panama, and Japan.
