Stephen Sondheim
Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021) was a deeply transformative figure in American theatre, known for his groundbreaking works such as Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods. Thought the 1970 and 80’s
Sondheim started in music at the age of ten, studying under renown composer, Oscar Hammerstein II. Sondheim was fortunate enough to be neighbors with the Hammersteins, and became good friends with Oscar’s son, James. Hammerstein saw Stephen’s passion for music from a young age, and nurtured his talent until his death in 1960. In 1950, Sondheim graduated magna cum laude from William’s Collage in Massachusetts. After graduation, Sondheim would face a few failed and unproduced projects before he would open West Side Story (referenced in this show!) in 1957; where Sondheim Wrote lyrics for Leonard Bernstein’s score.

John Weidman
An accomplished and innovative playwright and librettist, John Weidman was also a writer on Sesame Street from 1986 to 2016. He is known for his ability to push conventional theatrical form. Weidman notably served as the president of the Dramatists Guild of America from 1999 to 2009.
John’s Father, Jerome Weidman, was himself an accepted theatre writer. A young John was determined to follow in his father’s footsteps. Weidman attended Harvard, where he studied West Asian history, followed by Yale Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate. His major literary success in the theatre was his collaboration with Sondheim on Pacific Overtures.
