Student Visits To Their
Pen Pal Navy Ships

Visiting a Navy ship was something we never expected. We sent our letters to the ships when they were thousands of miles away, in foreign waters. Our school is not near a Navy shipyard. So, we never expected to meet our pen pals face to face.

When our teacher told us that a Navy captain called her and said, "We just have to meet these students," it was great. Sometimes the ships came to New York City or Boston, and they invited us to go to the ship. We got busy, chartered buses, made huge banners and signs to carry onboard, practiced our musical instruments, learned Navy songs from memory, baked cookies, and made arrangements to go.
