Before we went down to inspection we had to watch some videos on the basics of dimensional inspection and GD&T. In these videos we learned what calipers and micrometers are, what a thou is (thousandths of a inch) and how to read it on paper. What all of the symbols in GD&T are and what they mean.
After we learned what we could from the videos we went out onto the floor so we could have an in person experience and better understanding of GD&T and quality. Shawn was the mentor I went out on the floor with, he taught me how to read a work order, how to check different angles and dimensions. He also showed me how to line up a part on a PCM so I could tell if a part was correctly made. A PCM is a sheet of plastic that has a life scale diagram of a part so you could lay a made part onto it to quickly see if there was something wrong with the part. We also used calipers and micrometers to measure different holes placements and holes sizes, and we used height gauge and diameter gauges to measure the heights of holes and parts and to see the diameter of holes.
