California History - Disenios: Land grants that could be earned by citizens of California after the Spanish lost the war with Mexico. Students also created their very own Brand to accompany their Rancho.
Growth Mindset - Each student chose a goal that they wanted to get better at. Examples of these were: "I will get better at Reading" or "I will be better at communicating with my peers".
Wanted Posters and Campsite - On the cabinets there are Wanted Posters that the students created about themselves. This tied into the novel By the Great Horn Spoon in that one of the characters was on Outlaw. To the right you will see a tree, during the year this area was used as our "Campsite" or our "alternative" seating area where students could work together on projects or read a book.
Students used their math and social skills to create a survey question that they asked to 50 other students. Then they used their chromebooks to create a graph with the results and wrote a short paragraph about their survey.
My Class Library - All AR leveled for easy selection and differentiation.
To incorporate technology each student created a google slide that was displayed in a slideshow during open house. On this slide they were instructed to state what their favorite memories of 4th grade was and include pictures. On the students desks were displayed Endemic Animal reports that they wrote, typed and included pictures. These reports were on Endemic animals of the Galapogos Islands because in the book By the Great Horn Spoon the characters travel around the Islands.
Two California Missions created by students. Each student was instructed to present their Mission infront of the class.
I displayed the students California Mission reports by drawing California on butcher paper and then connecting the reports to the location of the Missions by using string. Students paintings, Missions, and drawings that accompanied their reports were displayed around the room.
Constellation - Tieing in with our By the Great Horn Spoon novel, students researched and then created their own constellation.
