British Library MS Harley 2253: A New Reading of the Passion Lyrics in their Manuscript Context (Viator 40.1, 2009)

A trilingual, two-part composite codex, BL mansucript Harley 2253 has been the object of intense scholarly scrutiny. The later portion of the manuscript, transcribed in the mid-14th century, contains a large number of Middle English lyrics, along with various devotional texts. In this article I focus on page layout of the Passion lyrics, arguing that the scribe has intentionally incorporated parchment imperfections in order to illustrate the central theme of the poems.
