The Destruction d'Acre and its Epistolary Prologue (BNF fr. 24430). (Viator 42.1, 2011)
Immediately following the Fall of Acre in 1291, the master of the Hospitallers, Jean de Villers, wrote a letter to his superior, Guillaume de Villeret, describing the fierce battle that ended Western control of the city. This unique document, originally written in French, survives in a single manuscript, BnF fr. 24430, where it serves as a prologue to a French translation of the De Excidium Aconis. This is the sole surviving copy of the French text(s). Both the letter, which serves as a kind of prologue to the account, and the account itself are edited here for the first time.
