Use clues in video imagery to map a bird's eye view path on a My Map

What do you notice? What do you need to know? What do you wonder?

Use video footage (handheld or drone) to show a ‘path’ at street level or low-level aerial. Use the 3 questions above to initiate discussion.

On My Maps, students could plot and describe:

The starting orientation
The shape of the ‘path’
The turns taken (degrees)
The distance travelled
The (average) speed (of the walker or flyer)

Simplify:

Show more detail in video imagery
Use regular shapes as the path
Use simple fractional turns
Keep speed consistent (& true)

Extend:

Create a time/distance graph of the path
Create an elevation/distance graph
Create a time/elevation graph
Graph the acceleration of the drone
Make generalisations about the relationships shown in the graphs
Determine the speed of the person/drone at different stages of the path
Speed up the video footage!!!! (Explore frame rates)
Get students to design and film their own paths for peers to interpret
