"My vision of Energy" moves towards the more sustainable
Invention : Hybrid-Electric Vehicle
Design, implementation, and commissioning of all phases (from the electronics and programming, to power systems, and to drives) of a Hybrid-Electric Vehicle project for go/stop, slow, low-gear, and heavy traffic conditions in megacities and in emerging economies.

Technical and Corporate : Accomplished a turn-around in Operations nationwide,
Turned around one of the largest operations in the country, making the equivalent gross income of US$1 billion in 1983
Complied with all the loan covenants on "rate of return on rate base" (RORB) with the World Bank and ADB for the first time in NAPOCOR's history
Achieved technically acceptable reliability and efficiency in all the electric grids in the country
Re-established the National Power Corporation's financial and technical viability as a profitable and decentralized organization.
Energy Projects
Design principles formulated for the utilization renewable energy, taking into account the fact that it is a variable resource.
Combination of renewable energy technologies with energy-efficiency principles and practice, in order to service end-user needs. A must: the energy content of gas that is discarded into the environment should be almost at ambient conditions of the atmosphere. In this way, the use of the energy content of the fuel is maximized.
Chilling and heating or drying applications share a common set of energy sources, such that the energy that is not used for electrical power generation becomes the input to "absorption chilling and mechanical chilling applications", and the output of these heat pumps is made to perform heating and drying work.
Three projects revolve around the "practical" and "pragmatic" approaches to traditional engineering. Research in one of these areas will discover ways of supplying the energy needs of a farming community, heating and chilling needs of buildings, such as supermarkets, hospitals, homes, commercial, and industrial buildings.
1st. I integrate resources, prime-movers, and usage, for an efficient and clean energy system. A system with a fuel input of 100 BTU of fuel in an internal combustion engine, combined with "heat pumps" (freezers, chillers, etc.) will also "harvest energy from the environment" to accomplish theoretical work of more than 280 BTU.

2nd. My Hybrid-Electric Vehicle (HEV): Plug-In with Grid Feedback Capability. My US Patent Pending design, which has already passed the prototype stage has features that could open new markets.

3rd. Wave Power Converter - operating solely on principles of kinematics and hydraulics and protects itself by diving to safe depths (no electronics).
Teaching
My Teaching Philosophy
The classroom is the platform for the growth of human beings.
Teachers manage this platform by facilitating the creation of an environment, where the human being’s "freedom to think" is unleashed and enhanced.
Teaching
2nd. Braille Literacy Classroom. One affordable medium-range PC provides each of five visually impaired users with one inexpensive keyboard and one easily fabricated refreshable Braille display reader plus the already existing keyboard and display monitor used by a sighted person.
3rd. Website of People are Process and People are Process, authored by Tina Calasanz

Energy-Related Publications
POWER SYSTEMS OPERATION
T. Calasanz. Predicted in a The Manila Chronicle article of May 5, 1989, "The Power Sector in Perspective," the ensuing severe power crisis in the Philippines starting 1992, more than two years before its occurrence. Also recommended quick remedial measures in the same article.
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
T. Calasanz, "Culture-Based Strategy for Change and Development" (pamphlet guide), Conference of the Electric Power Supply Industry (CEPSI), Philippine Society for Training and Development, and NAPOCOR, 1981.
Discussed the interaction of people within a Filipino organization
Showed how productivity and good organizational health could be achieved by re-engineering its management style
Became a model for some neighboring ASEAN electric utilities
Was invited to join their organization after I left the National Power Corporation.
EMERGENCY SYSTEMS IN POWER SYSTEMS
Emergency Systems in Electric Power Systems, National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) (handbook for operators), 1982, by T. Calasanz and 120 of NAPOCOR's Specialist Engineers.
Failure of a small DC relay that controls the DC lube oil pump to supply oil to its steam turbine bearings could cost a utility US$100 million and a 10-month downtime
Handbook is to make sure that all the components comprising the "last lines of defence" are properly designed and duly maintained
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES IN POWER SYSTEMS
Start-up and Shut-down, National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) (handbook for operators), (1983), by T. Calasanz and 120 of NAPOCOR's Specialist Engineers.
Start-ups and shut-downs are the most critical "technical transients" in the life of equipment in electric power systems
Manual lists down all the "concurrent" and "sequential" activities to be performed in each power plant or substation
Activities are formulated according to "best practice" for each installation
Each activity must be signed off by an "accountable" person
Only the Plant Manager or his designated official may clear the start-up or shut-down process to proceed to the next step.
INNOVATION IN CONTROL SYSTEMS
Designed and implemented the first high voltage unmanned control of (138-kV) substations in the Philippines, by T. Calasanz and 30 of NAPOCOR's Volunteer Engineers. (View the Business Day Newspaper report of April 16, 1982)
ENERGY MANAGEMENT
As editor-in-chief of The Energy Manager (a publication of the Energy Management Association of the Philippines, or ENMAP), put emphasis on energy services as a frame of mind which encourages energy management programs to set up measures of success and emphasized "savings" through energy management and productivity improvement as a "new resource" to an organization, not saved, but reclaimed.

A unique personal contribution to the University: Innovation in teaching electronics, as characterized by a) project-based, b) student-centered, c) designed for enjoying the course content, d) the generation of a highly motivated learning process, e) and above all, the unleashing of the students' "freedom to think". Earned the "School of Science and Engineering Dean's Award for Teaching Innovation" for this.
