The Scientific Method
In ancient times, people tried to explain the world around them based on what they saw. People in ancient times saw that the sun came up from one side of the earth, moved across the sky, and went down on the other side. Based on this observation, they believed that the sun travels around the earth. Going directly from observation to conclusion is called non-scientific thinking.
Here is an example of non-scientific thinking. Maybe you had a sick stomach, and ate a candy bar. An hour later, you observed that you felt much better. You might conclude that it was the candy bar that made you feel better. But there are other possible explanations for the observation. Maybe you had taken some medicine an hour earlier, and it took a while to work. Maybe enough time had passed, and you would have felt better without eating the candy bar. Non-scientific thinking happens all the time.
The scientific method is a way of thinking that helps you to avoid drawing incorrect conclusions. It helps you to avoid non-scientific thinking. It reminds you to treat your first conclusion as one of several possible conclusions. It reminds you to gather evidence to support your conclusion.
The five steps in the scientific method begin by questioning an observation, and end with a conclusion that is based on evidence.
Step 1 in the scientific method is to ask a question about your observation, such as, “What makes a sick stomach feel better?”
Step 2 is to state a possible answer to the question, or a hypothesis, such as, “A candy bar makes a sick stomach feel better.”
Step 3 is to test the hypothesis. This can be done in many different ways. You could wait until you have a sick stomach again, eat a candy bar, and see what happens. You could ask a lot of people if eating a candy bar had ever made a sick stomach feel better. Figuring out how to test a hypothesis is what makes science challenging.
Step 4 is to think about the findings—think about what happened when you tested the hypothesis.
Step 5 is to draw a conclusion— and share it with the rest of the world.
Questions:
What is non-scientific thinking? Give one example of non-scientific thinking.
What is scientific thinking? Do you support scientific or non-scientific thing? Explain your answer.
In simple sentences, list down the 5 steps in scientific thinking.

Tuttle the Turtle
Tuttle was snug inside his leathery egg. It was completely dark, but he didn’t care because he was warm and safe in a nest in the sand. His mother had left Tuttle and his brothers and sisters hidden inside the nest. When she knew her eggs were safe and she returned to her place in the ocean. Tuttle and his family were sea turtles.
One day something inside Tuttle told him he was getting too big for his egg. It was time for Tuttle to hatch. It was time for all the baby turtles in the nest to hatch. It is safer to hatch and leave the nest at night. Many predators find baby turtles to be a tasty meal. Birds and mammals will eat baby turtles.
Meanwhile Tuttle worked hard to break open his egg shell. Birds have a brittle egg shell but turtles have a soft shell that is hard to open. It took some time for Tuttle to open his egg using his egg tooth but he worked hard and finally left his shell behind.
But remember, Tuttle’s mother had left her eggs buried about twenty inches deep in the sand. Tuttle and the other baby turtles had to dig their way out of the nest but one by one they emerged from the sand.
Tuttle didn’t have time to look around at the beach. Tuttle didn’t care about the sky or the stars. Instinct told him that his home was in the ocean. Tiny Tuttle wasn’t afraid of the big ocean waves that landed on the beach. He ran to the ocean as fast as he could along with dozens of his brothers and sisters who had just hatched too.
Tuttle already knew how to swim and how to hold his breath under water. He knew how to breathe while he was under the water too. Tuttle used his small flippers to swim out into the vast unknown ocean. Tuttle would never come back to land again but his sisters will some day lay their eggs on a sandy beach.

What is the safest time for the turtles to hatch and why?

In today's day and age we have moved from paper to technology, but despite that trees are still being cut for several reasons! Trees are cut for their wood. This wood is used in building furniture, or burning fires. The trees may also be used for medicinal purposes and most importantly for paper. Trees are also cut down to make buildings, malls, schools or to grow food on that land.
There is a big pine forest at Keroli Tappar, Uttarkashi. Once there stood a tall pine tree, which was the tallest amongst all trees. It grew up to 63.14 meters. It won the award of the tallest pine tree of Asia.
Tourist from many places came to see it. They were fascinated with this tree. They wrote their names on its trunk with nails and knives. Over time, it became infected with bacteria and grew sick. Later, its trunk became hollow. People no longer came to view this art of nature. Scientists were specially called from Dehardun to come for its treatment and it soon began to recover.
But unfortunately a storn broke it in to two pieces since it had become very weak. After it broke, its wood was cut into logs which were used for the above purposes.
Once this tree was tall and beautiful and man had to raise his head with pride to look at it. Today man has to bend his head in regret. We have destroyed the tallest pine tree in Asia.
We should conserve our environment and take care of our surroundings. It is our duty to give back to nature. As a citizen of our country it is our responsibility to use resources sensibly. Being the youth, we have to save these resources for the future world which is yet to come.
Questions:
Why are trees cut down?
Why did tourists visit this tree and what did they do?
What happened to the tree? Why did the tourists stop visiting it?

Introduction to Hotel for Dogs
Hotel for Dogs is a funny book written by Lois Duncan. It doesn’t start out funny, though. Bruce and Andi’s family has just moved to a new town. Bruce is in sixth grade, and Andi is in fourth. They are staying at their aunt’s house until their parents find a new house. Bruce and Andi aren’t very happy about this because their dog Bebe can’t stay at Aunt Alice’s house with them. Aunt Alice is allergic to dogs.
On the first day at Aunt Alice’s house, their aunt introduces Bruce and Andi to Jerry, who lives next door. Jerry is Bruce’s age, and he has a dog named Red Rover. Later that day, Bruce and Andi see Jerry and Red Rover again, in Jerry’s front yard. Jerry is pushing Red Rover to try to make him pull a wagon. Bruce runs over to Jerry and tells him that Red Rover will not like him if he keeps treating him that way, but Jerry tells Bruce to mind his own business. Jerry shoves Andi out of the way and starts to leave. He calls Red Rover to come with him. But Red Rover just moves over closer to Bruce.
Bruce and Andi miss Bebe. When Andi walks home from school each day, she pretends that Bebe is walking along behind her. One rainy morning, Andi sees a cute little white dog sitting on Aunt Alice’s porch to keep dry. She picks up the little dog and pets it. She wishes she could keep it. When she comes home from school that day and goes to her closet, there on the floor is the little white dog. And three tiny puppies! Andi doesn’t know what to do. She knows the dog can’t stay in Aunt Alice’s house. She is afraid if she tells Bruce he will tell their parents, and then the dog and her puppies will have to go.
What finally happens is that when Andi tells Bruce, he helps her keep the secret. They find a house nearby with no one living in it and take the little dog and its puppies there. They make a nice bed for the dogs, and every day they take them food, and play with them. They are also careful to keep the house clean. Then Red Rover runs away from Jerry, and shows up at the house where Bruce and Andi are keeping the little white dog and her puppies. They let Red Rover stay there too. The house is becoming a regular dog hotel! Before long more dogs are added, and Bruce and Andi let two friends in on the secret. The two friends are a big help, but things just keep getting crazier and crazier.

Why are Bruce and Alice living in Aunt Alice's house?

Global Warming
Global warming is a significant environmental issue that affects our planet. It refers to the gradual increase in Earth's average temperature due to human activities. One of the main causes of global warming is the excessive emission of green house gases, such as carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat from the sun, leading to a rise in temperature. As a result, our climate patterns are changing, causing various impacts on the environment and living organisms.
The effects of global warming are far-reaching. One noticeable consequence is the melting of polar caps and glaciers. This leads to rising sea levels, which pose a threat to coastal areas and low-lying islands. Additionally, global warming disrupts ecosystems, affecting plants and animals. Some species may struggle to adapt to the changing conditions, leading to the loss of biodiversity. Extreme weather events, like hurricanes and heatwaves, are also becoming more frequent and intense due to global warming.
Addressing global warming requires collective action. We can all contribute by reducing carbon footprint. This can be done by conserving energy, using renewable sources of energy, and practicing sustainable habits like recycling and reducing waste. By working together, we can mitigate the effects of global warming and create a healthier and a more more sustainable future for our planet.
Questions:
What is global warming? What causes it?
What are the consequences of global warming?
How can we reduce carbon foorprint?
