- se mai numește și ,,prezentul real”;

- se folosește în limba engleză pentru a exprima acțiuni care sunt în progres, în prezent (acum);

- îl putem întâlni împreună cu adverbele de timp ,,now”, ,,right now”, ,,at the moment” etc;

- toate timpurile continue se construiesc cu ajutorul verbului auxiliar (ajutător) ,,to be” și cu particula ,,ing”, care se adaugă în continuarea verbului de conjugat; terminația „-ing” ne semnalează un posibil timp continuu, iar formele verbului ,,to be” ne spun ce fel de timp continuu avem (prezent, trecut, viitor etc).

OBSERVAȚII : atunci când adăugăm terminația -ing la verb, pot apărea următoarele modificări:
§ dacă verbul se termină în ,,e”, acesta dispare la adăugarea lui ,,ing” : smile - smiling, have - having
§ verbele DIE (a muri), LIE (a minți) și TIE (a lega) se transformă considerabil atunci când primesc terminația ,,ing” și devin DYING, LYING și TYING
§ dacă verbul se termină în consoanăvocalăconsoană și accentul este pe vocala dintre consoane, atunci ultima consoană va trebui dublată (prea complicat, nu? :) ) eg. let - letting, begin - beginning, stop – stopping
EXERCISES
I. Put the verbs in brackets in the Continuous Present Tense:
Right now, as I (watch) … TV, my little brother (do)… his homework. Mother is in the kitchen. She ( prepare)… dinner for the whole family – my grandparents (live)… with us.
Father is still at work, because they (have)… a difficult time at their office with some financial transactions, so he (work)… overtime, lately. But this does not happen all the time.
As I (listen)… to the news, on TV, I (lay)… the table for dinner, to help my family with the house chores, since I am the big brother. My brother and I (help)… the family with the housework all the time, because both our parents (work)…. and the family work must be shared.
II. Put the verbs in brackets in the Continuous Present Tense:
