Unit 5

In Unit 5, we made two presentations. One was a group project, and the other was solo.

Global Group Project:

With this project, I was able to work with a friend of mine on a PowerPoint where we both shared what we learned about our chosen countries, mostly as it relates to demographics and technology usage and if there is a digital divide. I chose Mexico, and she chose Somaliland. I learned that Mexico has a population of about 132.8 million, and Somaliland has one of about 5.7 million. The difference is very large, which I found to be very interesting.

Emerging Technology:

In this project, I researched a form of technology that has emerged in the past 5-10 years. I chose online mental health resources because I am a psychology major, and I love encouraging people to embrace mental health and cope through stigma. We researched our topic, its advantages, potential threats and management, as well as other things.

Lessons Learned:

I learned that using the references section of Word makes citing sources so much easier! I also learned that just because a background is cool does not mean it needs to be on every slide. My teachers in high school stressed the idea that a white background is boring, but doing this assignment helped me learn that white backgrounds are fine because adding things like pie charts (which I learned you can do in PowerPoint :D) and images are plenty enough for making a slide aesthetically pleasing. My partner helped me with this when we worked together on the global group project because she helped bring organization, and her finishing the assignment so quickly encouraged me to get it done faster. We were able to talk about the design and edit our work to try and make it look like two different people didn't copy and paste their own versions of work on the same slide. For the Emerging Technology presentation, I learned how to format and adjust the positioning of the photos and edit transitions between the slides. My interest in psychology and mental health help in the midst of stigma has been strentgthened, and I will never stop encouraging people to reach out for help. Both projects were fun, and I am very grateful they were assigned.

What did you learn about researching and presenting information by completing the two projects in this unit?

- I learned that using the notes section of PowerPoint makes it so much easier to organize information on the slides. I also learned that you could view those notes with the presenter’s view, and that you can edit the timing of animations and transitions and other factors within them.
