For this project, we were instructed to describe and learn about the impact social media has on us personally and on society.
After taking the "Am I addicted to social media?" quiz, I realized that I'm not as addicted to social media as I had thought. My results stated that "You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits!", which definitely makes me feel better about the amount of time I waste on there and think about the people that are actually social media addicts to the point where they can't live without it. Although my results weren't the best, it makes me think about ways I can decrease my reliance, and the excessive amount of time spent on social media that could be used for other things.
In the articles provided, the most interesting statistic to me was the growth of TikTok users since 2021, up from 21%. I relate to this because my use of this app has definitely gone up since the app had blown up and it's one of my most used forms of social media.
In my opinion, I think social media has had both a negative and positive impact on society because it has allowed to for advancement opportunities while also opening the door to cyberbullying and mental health issues surrounding comparison. Personally social has had a positive impact in the way I can communicate with family members in other states and countries. But social media has also had a negative impact in the way I view myself and my life in comparison to influencers or other people my age, which has really affected my mental health and my self-perception. Overall, I think the way social media impacts society depends on the way or reason that people are using it for.
I learned that my social media is pretty excessive but not to the point of addiction, which has taught me to find ways to lessen it before I reach this point. Although my usage is average compared to other people my age, I think it's important to find forms to manage our time, so social media doesn't take over our lives.
