While I was creating this work, I wanted it to be as realistic as possible even though I edited some of the sound bites. The sounds that I used to create the whole piece are a mix of things that I noticed before (such as the sound of the water in the fountain) and sounds that I had just noticed (such as the rhythmic tapping). When I made my initial recording, I saw that there were a lot of sounds that were already there like the sound of a motorcycle revving. Things that I would not have know were there initially appeared as I listened to the recording the first time. After every listen, I seemed to always find something new. Near the end of the recording, there are two people talking that say his to me as I am recording. I respond to them shyly thinking that I should not speak because I am recording the sounds around me. After thinking about it for a bit, I realized that if the roles were reversed, the sound of my voice would be a part of my surroundings!
I chose to record a few sounds while I was at ChickFilA early in the morning. I had never sat and thought about how many sounds there are in the environment since they all meld together. Especially if you are in a rush or just if you are not paying full attention since there are many forms of stimuli in the area. The way that I tried to contrast the sounds I used to create linear time is by playing with volume. In the middle I made sure that my sounds were heightened in volume while the beginning and end were a bit softer for easier listening. Some of the sounds such as the crashing was very noticeable, but there are some sounds in there that would not have been highlighted very easily if they were not recorded and played back. For instance, the soft sound of some keys jingling were there in the background. It was easy to hear on the audio recording, but the jingling most likely would not have gotten very much attention drawn to them if someone were listening to them in real life. The timbre of the sounds in this recording are very recognizable, even if the listener is not there in the moment.
My goal for this work was to create an 8-bit-esque sound. For years I have wanted to know how to create music that would be used on a pixelated video game. The first thing that I tried was to create the underlying beats with a synthesizer to create the video game atmosphere while listening to the piece. I made sure to use the rock eight beat as a base for my piece, but then I started building everything else around that beat. I do not have any prior knowledge for creating songs through beats, or at all. Therefore, I did not know exactly what I was doing completely. I went with what I believed sounded good. There may have been times where the beats placements were cluttered, but in the end, I believe that they resolved themselves. While doing so, I made sure that the sounds still fit the theme that I was going for.
I made this piece to sound darker than really anything that I have made before. It tells the story of a woman that is on trial of witch craft though she has done nothing wrong. The vocals are crunchy and need to be reworked, along with the lyrics, but I can worry about that later. I enjoyed making this piece because it is linear but it still has high tension that lowers only a little by the end of the song. If I were to make an album for this, my goal for this song would be for it to have a proper into but to have the outro serve as a gateway to another song on the album. Maybe one that shows the point of view of a juror or the judge? I have included audio to show what I wanted the vocals to sound like and a picture for the actual written composition.
