The Association Musicologie Médiévale is pleased to announce…
The Association Musicologie Médiévale, in collaboration with the Abbey of Saint Peter of Solesmes, is pleased to announce that we will have the honor of organizing the 2025 Gregorian Chant Session, which will be held at the Abbey of Saint Peter of Solesmes from July 6 to July 11, 2025.
From July 6 to 11, 2025, the Abbey of Saint-Pierre of Solesmes will host a session devoted to the practice and study of Gregorian chant.
The thousand-year-old history of the abbey has heard the ancient Gregorian chant melodies and the sung prayers of the Benedictine monks who praised God and were in search of him.
Inspired by this place of prayer and by the spirit of Dom Guéranger, the restorer of the Liturgy and Gregorian chant, this Session will focus on praising the Lord and on seeking Him through the sung prayer of the Church.
We want to go back to the basics, especially to acquire a renewed union with the Holy Spirit, who enlivens the Word sung in the Sacred Liturgy.
Contemplation of God and meditation on his Word inspire us to praise God with all our being through chant in the liturgy.
Gregorian chant is par excellence, the form in which the soul of the faithful, in unity and with the whole Church, magnificently and humbly expresses its fervor, gratefulness, emotions, praises, and petitions.
That is why we will be giving greater importance to the dialogue between creature and Creator during the liturgy; the Mass and Divine Office will be the heart of our session days. We wish to continue the work of Dom Guéranger, who has enabled many faithful to rediscover the meaning of the liturgy, the source of the spirit of the true Christian.
That is why we will be focusing on the practice and study of psalmody, studying the foundations of liturgy and the liturgical forms of Gregorian chant. Furthermore, we will examine the close link between melody and text. Workshops on the spirituality of Gregorian chant will also be offered. In addition, Dom Guilmard will give theoretical and practical instruction on the rhythm of the sung Word.
A new, dynamic approach to modality will be presented by Dominique Crochu: the question of B-flat and the problems of melodic restitution will be addressed in light of recent discoveries. The Abbey of Solesmes is the home of the Atelier de Paléographie Musicale. This is a rich source of documents providing access to the earliest manuscripts. In this way, we will deepen our understanding of the different notations and our liturgical music roots.
We will look at the historical background of Gregorian chant. Dom Guilmard will explain the role of Saint Chrodegang in the creation of Gregorian chant. This bishop of Metz sought unanimity with the Apostolic See and set in motion what would be the liturgy and chant of the Church throughout the Middle Ages. It is a significant event that took place between the work of Saint Gregory the Great and the liturgical renewal of Dom Guéranger a millennium later.
The spirit of unanimity with the whole Church, the desire to rejuvenate our approach toward Gregorian chant, a return to the essentials: these are our ideals during this Gregorian chant session, which will be placed under the patronage of Saint Gregory the Great, Saint Chrodegang of Metz and Dom Guéranger

Saint Benoît (Regula, caput XIX, De disciplina psallendi)
