Your classmates and your school will benefit greatly from your work as a peer writing tutor because you will help create a space for writers to talk about their writing, and the feedback that you provide will help them grow as writers.
But you will also benefit from working as a peer writing tutor. You may notice how it helps you in your classwork now, and it also might help you well into your future. A group of peer writing tutors at Peters Township Middle School studied how being a peer tutor in middle school changed them. They found that
The peer tutors became more confident in and out of school.
The peer tutors developed stronger relationships with peers and teachers.
The peer tutors improved their writing skills.
The peer tutors’ high school and often career choices were influenced.
You likely will find that you grow in similar ways from your experience as a peer writing tutor. Keeping a tutoring journal where you write about your experiences tutoring and working with your team in the center is a great way to reflect on the things you are learning.
Then, you can talk about your experience as a peer writing tutor when you apply for things like jobs, internships, college, or scholarships. You can share how being a peer writing tutor improved your writing, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
Watch one of the tutor videos from this webpage: UWM Tutor Alumni. Take notes on what the tutor said they learned from working in the writing center. Share your notes with your team.
