Based on source evaluation lessons offered by the Center for News Literacy, students learn about the role sources play in providing information to journalists. Students are taught to consider the reliability of sources based on five categories: their authority when it comes to the topic, whether they are named or anonymous, whether or not they are self-interested, whether they lend evidence or opinions to the story, and whether the information they give is corroborated by other information in the story.
A worksheet is provided to guide students through rating sources based on these qualities and then to consider a set of reflection questions based on the National Association of Media Literacy Education’s key questions to ask when analyzing media. Students are assigned to choose one of two news articles to evaluate, using video/audio/screen record software to show and talk aloud as they consider each source of information used in the online article.
