The Department of Culture and Arts (JKKN) Melaka, officially known as the Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara Negeri Melaka, is a government agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC).
JKKN Melaka is responsible for preserving, developing, and promoting the cultural heritage, traditional arts, and performing arts of the state of Melaka. The department serves as a platform to encourage community involvement in cultural activities and to nurture the creativity of local artists.
The organization carries out various programs, festivals, and workshops that highlight Malaysia’s diverse culture and traditions, with a special focus on Melaka’s unique multicultural heritage. Through these initiatives, JKKN Melaka plays a vital role in strengthening national identity and fostering unity through the arts.
The Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara (JKKN) Melaka was established as one of the state branches under the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN), which operates under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC). The department was created to manage, preserve, and promote the cultural and artistic heritage of Melaka through structured and continuous programmes.
The construction of the JKKN Melaka Complex, also known as Taman Budaya Negeri Melaka, began in June 2003 and was completed in December 2004. The complex is strategically located in Hang Tuah Jaya, Ayer Keroh, on a 9 acre site about one kilometre from the Ayer Keroh Toll Plaza. Its establishment marked an important step in providing a dedicated space for cultural and artistic activities at the state level.
The main objective of building the complex was to create a central hub for arts and culture, where local artists, cultural practitioners, and the community could gather to showcase talent, share knowledge, and celebrate Melaka’s rich cultural heritage. It also serves as a reference and resource centre for arts and culture, offering facilities for performances, workshops, exhibitions, and documentation.
Since its establishment, JKKN Melaka has played a significant role in planning and implementing various cultural programmes, including theatre performances, dance shows, traditional music events, and community based art festivals. Among its most notable events are the Festival Seni Selat Melaka, Festival Sungai Melaka, Sayembara Ratu Kebaya, and other initiatives that highlight the identity and diversity of Melaka’s people.
In addition to organizing events, JKKN Melaka is actively involved in arts education and community engagement. The department conducts training, seminars, and talent development programmes for local artists and youth to encourage their participation in the creative industry. These efforts support the government’s mission to preserve traditional arts while fostering innovation in contemporary art forms.
Over the years, JKKN Melaka has become a symbol of Melaka’s commitment to cultural sustainability and heritage preservation. It continues to strengthen collaborations between government agencies, private sectors, and local communities to ensure that arts and culture remain an integral part of the state’s social and economic development.
Through its consistent dedication and creative initiatives, JKKN Melaka not only preserves the legacy of Melaka’s past but also inspires new generations to appreciate and promote Malaysia’s cultural identity at both national and international levels.
