Biotechnology Past and Present

Objectives:

• Biotechnology includes all the technical processes that have led to improvements in products and services, and in understanding organisms and their component parts.
• Products developed through biotechnology must have a market large enough to generate the profit required to fund future research and development.
• Biotechnologists work in a variety of settings, including corporate labs, government agencies/labs, and academic (college and university) research facilities.
• What are the domains of the medicine and pharmaceuticals, agriculture, industry, the environment, instrumentation and diagnostics in biotechnology?
• Be able to identify examples of genetically engineered organisms and to identify the process by which it was genetically processed.
• Be able to discuss what was the Human Genome Project and its significance.
• How do biotechnology companies decide what products they will manufacture or services they will provide to the industry?
• Describe the process that biotechnology companies must follow through before they begin producing their product(s). Include time frames.
• Explain what is the product pipeline.
• What is considered “pure science”?
• Identify the different agencies involved in the regulation of biotechnology products. How does each contribute to the regulation process?
• Explain the scientific method in detail, in its appropriate order of sequence.
• HAve an understanding of the different jobs and requirements for hire in the biotechnology field.
• Explain what is bioethics and why it is important to develop skills in this area of biotechnology.
• How can using the Strategies for Values Clarification model help analyzing bioethical issues?
• Understand and develop the skills needed in maintaining a proper laboratory notebook.
• Be able to explain and develop laboratory experiments that is guided by the structure of scientific methodology.
