BIO = Life so it's pretty important to be able to distinguish between living (BIOtic) and non-living (Abiotic) things.
Characteristics of living things (Biotic)
To be classified as a living thing, most scientists agree that an object must exhibit the following characteristics.
All living things:
Can maintain a constant internal environment (homeostasis).
Contains DNA. Genetic material passed from parents to offspring.
Are made of one or more cells.
Can use energy and are capable of metabolism (turning food into energy).
Grow and develop.
Can evolve adaptations to their environment.
Can detect and respond to environmental stimuli.
Are capable of reproduction (producing offspring).
**Keep in mind that dead things are still considered "biotic" as they are made of organic material and we are talking about the species overall, NOT the individual.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Whether viruses are alive or not is still a matter of debate but unless your teacher specifically tells you otherwise, most assessments will default to the current standard in which VIRUSES are considered NON-LIVING (Abiotic).
