MEIOSIS is cell division that creates haploid GAMETES (egg and sperm). Each gamete contains half of the genetic material (DNA) required by the cell so that when fertilization occurs, the newly formed zygote has a full set of DNA.

The ONLY cells that undergo meiosis are cells destined to become egg or sperm cells. Males continuously conduct meiosis throughout their lifetime while females are born with all of their gametes in place (no further meiosis required).
