The Ultrasound/Education fellow has two main roles:
1. Diagnostic ultrasound and special ultrasound procedural rotations
a. Use every opportunity to scan and learn from the techs
b. Wednesday and Thursday AM - ultrasound procedures on Yawkey 6
c. Offer to bring residents/med students along to see the cases

2. Education for all reading room residents (R1-R3s, especially the R1s, usually total of 1-3 residents):
a. Helping them get oriented for their rotation
b. Do a detailed readout with them on their first few cases
c. Help them prepare a case to present on Fridays
d. Show cases and help medical students or international observers, if there is one
3. Preparation for some intermittent conferences - these are hit or miss - please check with Rafael if there are any extra conferences planned for the week (we will usually let you know ahead of time)
Approximate schedule - Education role:
Monday
AM
- Orientation to worklists
- Talk about case presentation for Friday conference and start looking for a case (get a case together by Tuesday PM)
- Find appropriate # and type of MRI for resident to read and assign them to them.
- Optional: give pre-lecture or go over a case in more detail with them (e.g. if you assign them knees, go over all MRI knee anatomy)
- Go over all resident cases with all residents together between 10-11am to prepare for attending readout
- Attending readout at ~11am
- Go over resident reports before they are signed off so that (resident can add fellow as a contributor so that they can access the report)
- Give resident feedback about reports
PM
- Preview and go over resident's XRs with a short discussion beforehand, same style as cross sectionals above
Tuesday – AM/PM Similar to Monday (not necessarily an initial overview of anatomy etc - can skip directly to reading and doing a resident readout before the attending)
Wednesday
AM - Ultrasound nerve clinic
PM – Similar to Tue PM
Thursday
AM – Ultrasound diagnostic/injection clinic
PM – Similar to Tue PM
Friday
AM – Similar to Tue AM unless you'also the Online only fellow because you are on call. Then you only have an afternoon shift.
PM – Similar to Tue PM; If on call, stay until 8pm to preview cases for call (double check with the attending the plan for the weekend)
In-between times:
- Read cases – ideally, do it live with the residents during their first time in the rotation, so they can see your thinking process
- Optional: research or educational project, submit proposal to Program Director for approval before September of academic cycle
EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCES REQUIRING PREPARATION
- Friday case conference, including resident presentation
- New York and Friends Bone Club – Thursday evenings every other month – prepare this conference if it falls on your week
EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCES, OPTIONAL
- Orthopedic Oncology Fellows Conference (open to all Radiology fellows, Tuesday, 7am - in person, Yawkey 2-230 Conference Room)
- Vancouver Bone Club (get added to list and watch, recordings are saved for ~1 week)
- Thursday AM Sports med conference (date/time may change, we will keep you posted)
