In my EDU 4020 course in the Spring 2023 semester, I got the opportunity to do multiple assignments on how I will include ALL students in my classroom which can be shown in the four assignments I did up above.
To effectively teach and reach all of my ELL students, I will employ diverse teaching strategies and create an inclusive classroom environment. I will use visual aids and gestures, which transcend language barriers. For instance, I will use images and hand motions when teaching vocabulary, like showing a picture of an apple while saying the word. I will also differentiate instruction by offering various materials and readings at different language levels. In addition, I will implement peer tutoring if needed, where advanced ELL students partner with beginners for language practice. Another way I will reach my ELL students is by incorporating culturally relevant content to engage and connect with their backgrounds. I will also encourage active participation through group discussions and collaborative projects, allowing them to apply language skills in context. Finally, I will regularly assess their progress to tailor support and ensure comprehensive language development. All and all, it is important for all my students to feel safe and feel they are being heard.
I would use a differentiated strategy to successfully teach and communicate with each student. I would first evaluate each student's learning style, assets, and weaknesses. Then, in order to accommodate different learning preferences, I would modify my teaching strategies accordingly, employing a combination of visual aids, practical exercises, and auditory materials. In order to address individual requirements, continuous feedback from the students and their families is essential. Additionally, encouraging a welcoming and inclusive classroom atmosphere in which each student feels appreciated is essential to increasing their engagement and enthusiasm to study. I have provided some examples of my work to the left on how I would effectively teach all students, specifically, focusing on students who may have a learning disability.
In my EDU 3001 course in the Spring 2024 semester we read the book Everyday Antiracism. In this book, I have learned many strategies on how to have an antiracist approach. One of the main strategies that stuck out with me is ways that teachers and their colleagues can create a school atmosphere that is devoted to creating equal opportunities for students of all different racial/ethnic backgrounds. There are four conversations that should be had:
The first one is to develop a shared understanding. All faculty and staff members must come to a consensus on what the school’s current needs are.
Identify effective practices by analyzing the students’ performance and figuring out ways to best meet the needs of all students.
Teachers need to develop the necessary resources. Schools need to develop time for weekly professional development so faculty can discuss what resources are needed for all students to have the resources they need to be successful
Make school improvements continuous
In my EDU 4010 (teaching for equity) course in the Fall 2023 semester, I created a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) statement for my final. In the above presentation, you can learn more about my role and perspective on creating an inclusive environment in my classroom for ALL my students.
